| THE LIVING DESERT Click on Giraffe for Information about TLD About Barbara McReal Barbara McReal and her shelter cat, Max! THE LIVING DESERT'S Docent Extraordinaries Barbara has lived in Bermuda Dunes for five years. She used to spend summers in Oregon, but been here full time for the last two years. Born in Iowa, she moved to Oregon when she was 12. Always a volunteer, she contacted the Living Desert the first year, and volunteered in the butterfly exhibit. Because she knew nothing about the desert flora and fauna, she enrolled in the Docent program in 2007, where she learned from experts about plants, animals, reptiles, birds, water, geology, and the Living Desert's history. On Tuesdays she gives the giraffe chat (where you can feed the giraffes) and during the winter is still with the butterfly exhibit, which now also has hummingbirds. On Fridays she is a touring Docent during the school year, interpreting either the African or North American section of the park. This summer she also fills in with the Thursday giraffe team and has worked on a project to identify all memorials in the park. Barbara has been approved to handle three lizards: Chuckwalla--the largest lizard in our desert; Bearded Dragon from Australia; and Northern Blue-tongued Skink, one of the largest of the Skink family; and the African Pygmy Hedgehog--an adorable little fellow who weighs one pound and fits in the palm of her hand. When her other duties are done, she often brings out one or more before heading for home. While the animals that will be brought to Art in the Dunes Festival have not been designated at this time, it is likely to be one or more of the animals Barbara handles, as well as others that staff or volunteers will bring.
